Valentine’s Day: No Need for a Panic Attack

I don’t mean to strike panic into the average male breast, but Valentine’s Day is getting close. Continue reading

The Politics of Tea

Friday afternoon found me trolling through the establishments of our little town, looking for loose tea, which, obviously, was not in the lumber store, the old fashioned department store (we actually have one of those), or the feed store; neither was it, however, in the grocery store. Merry Christmas, Everyone: Bring Out the Cocoa and Turn Off the Phones

While I have no sugarplum illusions that cyber activity will cease over Christmas Day (and yes, I realize that not everyone celebrates Christmas), I sincerely hope that people look forward to the 2011 New Year as a fresh opportunity to connect and re-connect with family, friends, and potential friends in a myriad of ways: Facebook, great; e-mail, quick and free; Twitter, rapid-fire updates; texting — please, not when you’re driving.

Please Do Not Give Me a Stressy Bessy Doll for Christmas. I Already Own One.

If there were such thing as a Stressy Bessy doll, she would look like me. The Son and Heir says that I focus on minutiae: “Remember when we vacationed on the beach and I wanted to climb those 25-foot rocks? You … Continue reading

Where Is the Christmas Tree?

Even though the Norwegian Artist and I successfully run a business together, we have not, after 28 years of Christmas cheer, developed a business plan for acquiring the annual Christmas tree. Every year, we stumble onto a different way of … Continue reading

You Don’t Have to Feel Thankful to Be Thankful

When you’re pregnant, it seems as if everyone around you, including men, is pregnant as well. Well, we’re not pregnant (breathe, mom; we’ve honestly stopped at four), but we do look around us and see a number of people in a … Continue reading

Christmas Cheer, Unemployment, and the Recession

I am a Pollyanna pessimist, which means that, although my natural tendency is to look at the negative aspects of life, I continuously train myself to look at the brighter side. I try not to be an irritating ass about … Continue reading

The Dreaded German Meal Knocks Life Awry

Cocooned in my baby-of-the-family world, I assumed for years that I was the only one who wept upon returning from school and smelling that peculiar acrid smell, but at a family gathering once I mentioned the “German Meal” and was surprised to hear all four sibling groan.

We Are a Nation United in Our Divisions

So close that they could kiss, Halloween and Election Day are similar in a significant way: they draw the attention of both The Far Right and The Far Left, who rarely, if ever, kiss.

The Jewel of All Dogs — Ruby Reigns Supreme

She burrows. She secretes food scraps in odd places. She has scratched both entry doors with her sharp, curved talons. She snuggles, aggressively; from the standpoint of the human being, this feels like sitting with the picked-over carcass of a roasted chicken. She smells like a little dog. Continue reading
