How Many Friends Is “Normal”?
When we live too much in the imaginary world of TV, movies, and social media, we start to believe that fantasy is reality. Take friendship, for example. In the land of myths, six to eight young, attractive, witty men and … Continue reading

The False Promotion — and Real Demotion — of the Family
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of wholeheartedly believing two opposite statements, cleverly presented, simultaneously. Take the concept of family, for example. For years, the government and mass media systems have been promoting the message that “family is dysfunctional,” … Continue reading

Does Leaving Church Mean Leaving Our Friends?
For many people, the one thing that stands between their leaving a church situation that is not working for them, or staying within and being unhappy, is friendship. Understandably, wherever we spend our time is where we make friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and … Continue reading

Mouth of the Grand Canyon — Mine
For some reason, I lack the genetic DNA to sit in a circle and listen to one or two members of a group drone on and on about how they feel about what we have all just endured. Continue reading

The Something Club
Not that I’d compare the Norwegian Artist to Solomon or anything, but he does come up with some savvy sayings on a regular basis. One observation he has made is that our lives come in chapters, and that no one … Continue reading

In This Cat and Dog World, Are You a Kitty or a Pooch?
The odd thing about our society, however, is that in some segments of it, junior high does, indeed, last far beyond 7th and 8th grade. Continue reading

Facebook Plea: “I’m Sad. Please ‘Like’ Me”
The ultimate result of this particular plea is to make a sad person feel sadder. Like any ultimatum, its unfulfillment speaks volumes, but not necessarily the right words. It is equivalent to the prayer, “Dear God, if you love me, please get me this job (or this guy, or this car, or this exotic truffle).”

Facebook Friends
When I troll through someone’s site and see that they have 555 Facebook “Friends,” I think — how do you keep up with all of these people? And, because the number of friends is open for others to see, there is the very public pressure to add to one’s list so that one does not look pathetic.
